    Friday Night Conversation:

Helping Transform Aggression for Women in Tech

    Hosted by Jennifer Bilbrey, LPC

On her way back from lunch with a group of men from work, my client felt excited. She had just landed a job at a tech start-up and was invited to go to lunch with them on the spur of the moment. She and her four male colleagues all geeked out about their favorite comic books and video games as they laughed and joked around. As the conversation continued, the four men commented on an attractive woman passing by on the street; to my client it was objectifying but not creepy. Instantly her excitement faded; in its place came fear and shame.

How would you respond in her shoes? How as a therapist would you help her understand what happened? Most importantly for our conversation, how does your own identity and privilege -- or lack thereof -- inform your response inside yourself and with your clients?

In my clinical experience, women working in the tech industry in Austin are often high-functioning, high-achieving employees who internalize toxic messages around gender norms.

Perhaps they are the only women in the room where “bro culture” runs rampant. For the purpose of our conversation together, I’m interested in hearing from other therapists working with women with similar experiences. To have these conversations, we as therapists must be willing to examine our own histories and biases. Maybe you’re reading this and wondering, “what’s the problem?” No matter our age or position, we must be thinking about this and talking to each other so that we can help these women become more and have more.

    Three Questions:

    1. What ideas were you taught growing up around being assertive or aggressive?

    2. How did these ideas influence your beliefs about gender?

    3. Have you ever had an “aha” moment when you realized sexism exists – and inside you as well?

    About the Presenter:

Jennifer runs a private practice in Austin working with adult individuals and couples, and she leads adult process groups. Working with Modern Analytic therapists has transformed Jennifer's life, and inspired her to utilize this model with her own clients. She is also a student at the Center for Group Studies.

Description: Sex and sexual behavior are not commonly broached topics in group therapy. When they are, it’s typically with the assumption that traditional, heteronormative relationships are the default baseline from which other sexual relationships or behaviors deviate. In addition, culturally competent clinicians, in their efforts to be inclusive and avoid shaming, may overlook clients’ maladaptive or dangerous sexual behavior. As a result, clients miss out on the opportunity to connect with and be understood by the therapist and group.

    Presented by:

    Dana Reichman, LCSW

Dana Reichman is a queer social worker who works in private practice with teens and adults using a relational, attachment-focused, and neurobiology informed approach. She especially values serving communities that have been historically marginalized and mistreated by mental health professionals and is privileged to work with clients navigating polyamory, kink, and sex work alongside other identities and lived experiences.

    Aaron D. Bandy, LCSW, NBCT

Aaron D. Bandy (he/him/his) is a Mexican-American Queer national board certified teacher, clinical social worker, counselor and psychotherapist. Aaron is currently providing counseling services at The University of Texas Austin’s Employee Assistance Program, and also maintains a psychotherapy private practice. At the Crossroads: How Our Trauma is Enacted and How We Use It to Lead a Group.

    Jordan Price, LCSW, CGP

    Event Description

What happens when the feelings induced in the leader stir their own trauma and leave the leader at a crossroads? No matter how much work we do to understand and integrate our emotional life, all of us can encounter experiences that pierce our insulation and awaken the traumatic feelings and stories inside. When this happens to us while leading a group, it sets us at a crossroads. How we embody what is happening inside us and how we may choose to use it affects the group process in the moment and ongoing. In this workshop we will be specific about how the enactment happens and describe both the divergent and common ways we may lead group when our trauma is alive. We will discuss how our leadership lives on in the group and informs the culture.

    Workshop Objectives:

The participant will be able to:

    1. Describe the leader’s experience of trauma as it’s felt in a group.

    2. List the 5 different ways a leader can intervene from a place of trauma activation.

    3. Discuss how a leader’s trauma-informed interventions affect the ongoing process and culture of a group.

Too Hard or Too Soft? Too High or Too Low?

Unleashing the Capacity for Intimacy in Modern Group

Ginger M. Sullivan, MA, LPC, CGP, F-AGPA Washington, DC

Group is the ideal environment to both study and heal adaptive defense that blocks life’s best offering – human connection. Through their actions and words, group members tell us their stories.  Modern group analysis rewrites them.

In this conference, we will identify relational styles and how it detracts from both psychological maturation and satisfying connection.  Essential concepts, such as grandiosity and shame, will be demonstrated experientially and didactically.

AGPS General Event Descriptions

WHAT IS A WORKSHOP?

Workshops are part lesson and part experiential process. Presenters provide education on a topic and insight into how to use techniques in a group therapy setting. The experiential portion often includes a “fishbowl” where participants volunteer to be part of a demonstration group therapy process led by the presenter and observed by other attendees. Finally, participants have time to ask questions and provide observation of the group session.

WHAT ARE DIVERSITY DIALOGUES?

The Diversity Dialogues are a conversation series intended to provide a safe space for mental health professionals to discuss critical topics in regards to race, culture, gender, age, ability, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, nationality, and religion in our community and around the world. Participants can heighten their awareness, become comfortable in engaging in intersectional dialogue, and utilize the understanding obtained to expand beyond cultural competency to the action of social justice.

WHAT ARE INSTITUTES?

Institutes are a highly experiential form of small group teaching led by an experienced leader intended to develop general therapy skills relevant to leading groups. These process-oriented groups are primarily designed for clinical professionals and often offer a chance to explore a particular theme in greater depth or to experience a different theoretical approach. The secure environment allows for rich cognitive and emotional learning about group process and oneself, as well as a chance for personal and professional renewal.

WHAT ARE FRIDAY NIGHT CONVERSATIONS?

These evenings were born from a desire to connect in a more personal setting and discuss meaningful issues affecting our professional lives and identities. They are available to members every few months with varied topics and hosts.
